World Suicide Prevention Day

2011 Theme: Preventing Suicide in Multicultural Societies
Supported by the World Health Organization, this annual Day promotes worldwide commitment and action to prevent suicides. On average, almost 3000 people commit suicide daily. For every person who completes a suicide, 20 or more may attempt to end their lives.
All countries are multicultural, with a diversity of religious and ethnic groups. While suicide prevention efforts require cultural sensitivity, it is important to understand that cultural differences in suicide rates may have more to do with such factors as poverty, unemployment and oppression than with culture.
